How do I Create a Members only Area in Joomla? 4.67 average 5 based on 3 votes 3.

In this tutorial we will be showing you how to add a page to your website that can only be seen by registered members.

Please click here for details of adding an article to Joomla.

In order to change who can see the link in your menu you need to set a couple of 'permissions' on both the menu link and the actual article.

Once you have created your article using the guide linked above you can then access the Article by going to:  Menus >>> (Your Menu Name)

If you click the text that says Public this will then cycle through the different permissions options.  You

have a choice of Public - Registered - Special

  • Public - Means Everyone can see it.
  • Registered - Only Registered Members can see it.
  • Special - Only Users such as Admins and Authors can see it.

Once you have set the permissions on the Menu Item you then need to set the same permissions on the actual article itself.

You can access your article by going to: Content >>> Article Manager

You will then see something similar to the above that you had for the menu manager.  Simply set the same permissions as you set to the menu item.

Hello,
I have problem with creating a 'members only' area on my website. The website is abour a choir and has public pages, for everybody to read. I want a few pages which only can be read by choir members. I have Joomla 1.7, and maybe your advice does not work there?

is to make the site to set the menu items to "registered" and then turn off auto registration in the joomla config menu. and then you can register the users manually. I'll check in 1.7 shortly and see if they have added a feature for an admin to "approve" members before they are classed as registered.

I know this was not possible in 1.5 as you needed a (free) component called community builder in order to add the ability of admin approval to registered members.

try the first option and I will post shortly on the later...

hi, sorry for the delayed response. In joomla 1.7 you can turn on admin approval for new users.

Please see here for more info:
